How to choose the right one
Further down on this page, we explain the most essential quality criteria you should pay particular attention to when buying an ice fishing heater currently available on the market.
Advantages and disadvantages of gas tent heaters
Ice Fishing heaters, which are operated with a gas cartridge, are compact and handy. They are easy to transport and can be used in almost any tent without any problems. Heaters that work with a gas cylinder are, in turn, suitable for more extended operation. Commissioning of both types of equipment is simple. Heaters with gas cartridges* usually work as closed systems where only one cartridge is inserted, and the heater is started. For heaters with gas cylinders, you will need a pressure reducer plus an additional hose to connect. But the devices are safer and have several possibilities for regulation. Furthermore, you don’t have to change a gas cartridge after a few hours.
Gas fishing heaters are optimal if they have a thermostat. It turns off the devices by itself when a specific temperature is reached in the tent and starts them again when it drops. Ideal and highly recommended is an oxygen deficiency safety device. It stops the gas supply if the oxygen content of the air in the tent falls below the safety limit of 1.5 percent. The disadvantage of tent heaters with gas is still the smell that causes headaches. The devices do not store heat. If they are switched off, the tent quickly cools down again. Small tents gas devices are rather unsuitable since they eat oxygen despite safety devices and can be dangerous for sensitive people.
Advantages and disadvantages of electric heaters
Electric tent heaters can also be set up inconspicuously and space-savingly in the tent. However, they do not function as autonomously as gas appliances because they require an electrical connection. If you only need your tent heater for one or two nights, devices that can be connected to a car battery are a practical solution. However, if you want to heat your tent electrically for several days, you will have to find a campsite with a power supply or buy a generator. Pay attention to consumption. With modern devices, it is between 800 and 2000 watts.
Choose a device with different heating levels. You can then adjust the heat output of your tent heater to the outside temperature and the tent’s size. Large tents require electric tent heaters with a power of up to 8 kilowatts. Small tents for one or two people are already pleasantly warm with the heating power of one kilowatt. Last but not least, pay attention to the operating time of your tent heating. It should match the weather conditions and your personal heating needs. Good electric heaters are designed for use for 8 to 12 hours a day. One of the disadvantages of electric tent heaters is that they also eat oxygen. Furthermore, they often do not store heat.
Security is everything!
Basically, every time that is heated, it must also be well ventilated. This applies regardless of whether gas appliances or electric tent heaters are involved. For every heating system, built-in overheating protection, as well as a splash guard, are an absolute must. For electric tent heaters, electric ceramic heaters* are a better option than the classic fan heaters. They even store heat to a certain degree. With fan heaters, the fire risk is still much higher. Especially with gas-powered heaters, you should never let out of sight. Do not sleep with the heater switched on! Always make sure that your tent heater is in a safe position.
You can place a gas bottle outside your tent. Here, too, it is essential to ensure stability and resistance to tipping. Never put any kind of equipment too close to the tent wall or too close to flammable materials. Always leave the connection hose of gas appliances free and make sure that nobody steps on it. This will wear the hose down in the long run and make it break. Always check connecting parts such as the pressure reducer or hose for leaks and function when you have not used the appliances for a long time. These parts must be replaced regularly as they tend to wear out.
